Are inflatable hot tubs worth it?

If you’ve been toying with the idea of investing in a hot tub, but don’t fancy the hefty price tag that goes with a regular, hard shell jacuzzi, an inflatable version could be ideal.

Budget wise, inflatable hot tubs win hands down, and if you’re new to the world of relaxing in bubbles going for this option is a great way to dip your toes in (in more ways than one)!

The best inflatable hot tubs are very easy to set up, but as you might expect, they aren’t as robust as hard shell tubs – therefore your new inflatable hot tub won’t last as long.

Hard tubs usually have an internal heater and heat up quickly even when it’s chilly outside, whereas inflatable tubs don’t have the same capacity to warm up and retain the heat.

Can inflatable hot tubs be used in winter?

The answer to this is based upon how mild winter tends to be where you live. In warmer climates an inflatable hot tub would probably be perfectly fine to use throughout the season.

However, here in the UK we don’t tend to enjoy relatively warm winters (unfortunately)! Cold UK winter temperatures can lead to problems with inflatable tubs.

If the hot tub is made from PVC there can be issues relating to the material becoming brittle if the temperature does dip too low.

Insulation can also be problematic, inflatable hot tubs aren’t insulated to cope with harsh winter weather, therefore they will not retain the heat well when it’s very cold.

Insulating ground mats can be a viable option – these can be laid below the hot tub in a bid to sustain a consistent and desirable temperature.

Are inflatable hot tubs dangerous?

Are inflatable hot tubs dangerous?

All hot tubs carry a certain amount of risk. Whether you are taking a dip in a hard-shell hot tub or an inflatable one, you need to be mindful of the water temperature and the amount of time you stay in the tub.

Even in the best inflatable hot tubs, the temperature should never exceed 40°C (104°F) and sitting in your tub for an extended period of time can have a negative impact on your well-being.

Over-exposure can lead to sickness, dizziness or even fainting spells, as a worst-case scenario spending too much time in the hot water could be fatal. That said, used correctly hot tubs can help you to relax, unwind and ease your mind and body.

Ensure safety of those using the tub by only allowing the correct number of bathers in at any one time (don’t try and cram seven people into a hot tub designed for four)! Not only is it dangerous, it will also be very uncomfortable!

It’s also a good idea to only use the hot tub for it’s intended purpose i.e. to sit and relax in! Dipping your head below the water line could result in tangled hair or jewellery, which can be exceptionally dangerous.

On a final sensible note, if you are planning to enjoy a glass or two of fizz whilst making the most of the bubbles do take care. Drinking alcohol can make you feel sleepy and cause you to overheat more quickly.

Can anyone use a hot tub?

Hot tub owners also need to be mindful that sitting in a hot jacuzzi won’t benefit everyone. Pregnant women need to take care – overheating can cause difficulties and be harmful to baby (especially during the first trimester).

Pregnant ladies can take a dip but need to take precautions such as keeping the temperature lower than 38.9°C and only staying in the tub for around ten minutes.  They should also try to keep their chest and arms elevated above the water line and preferably not use the jacuzzi alone.

Hot tubs and children don’t mix particularly well either. Youngsters should always be supervised to prevent accidents, and it’s essential you cover over the hot tub when it’s not being used.

It’s unwise to encourage children under the age of seven to use the hot tub, as those younger than this age often struggle to regulate body temperature – meaning they can overheat and become ill very quickly.

What can I put under my inflatable hot tub?

You can place an insulated ground mat beneath your hot tub. Some of the best inflatable hot tubs come with additional extras such as ground mats, covers etc so check the description carefully to see what’s included. If there’s no ground at included you can order one online.
